History

The MacQuarrie Clan (Clann Mhic Guaire) is one of the oldest clans of the Western Isles, tracing its lineage back to the royal house of Lorne and, like the MacDonalds, descending from Somerled. Their historic lands were centered on the island of Ulva, near Mull in the Inner Hebrides.

The MacQuarries were loyal allies of the MacLeans and took part in clan feuds against the Campbells. After the Jacobite risings and the economic hardships of the 18th century, many MacQuarries emigrated to North America and Australia, where they played notable roles in military and civic life.

Tartan

The MacQuarrie tartan is bold, featuring a dominant red base with green and black overchecks, symbolizing the clan’s proud warrior heritage.

Seat

The traditional seat of the clan was on the island of Ulva, a rugged and beautiful part of the Hebrides.
