Clan MacPherson

The Clan MacPherson (Gaelic: Clann Mhic a’ Phearsain, meaning “son of the parson”) is one of the principal clans of the Clan Chattan Confederation. Their name reflects their ecclesiastical origin, descending from Muireach, a 12th-century parson of Kingussie in Badenoch. Over time, the MacPhersons became known as fierce Highland warriors and loyal allies within the Chattan confederacy.

Clan Crest

The crest shows a cat sejant proper (wildcat sitting upright), symbolizing courage, ferocity, and the untamed Highland spirit.

Clan Motto

The clan motto is “Touch Not the Cat but a Glove”, a warning that the MacPhersons, like the wildcat, are formidable when roused.

Clan History

The MacPhersons were key leaders of the Clan Chattan alliance and often contested leadership with the Mackintoshes. They played a central role in the Battle of Invernahavon (1370) and later supported the Jacobite cause, most notably at the Battle of Culloden (1746), where many MacPhersons fought bravely for Prince Charles Edward Stuart.

Clan Tartan

The MacPherson tartan is a bold red-based sett with green and blue, reflecting both the fiery nature of the clan and its strong Highland roots.

Clan Seat

Historically, the chiefs of Clan MacPherson held their seat at Cluny Castle in Badenoch, a symbol of their authority and resilience.
