Clan MacNeil of Gigha

The Clan MacNeil of Gigha (Gaelic: Clann Nèill Dhubha) is the southern branch of the historic Clan MacNeil. Settled on the fertile Isle of Gigha off the Kintyre peninsula, this line of the clan became known for its independence, seafaring tradition, and close ties to both Norse and Gaelic culture. Though smaller than the Barra line, the Gigha MacNeils maintained a proud warrior heritage and distinct identity.

Clan Crest

The crest of the MacNeils of Gigha shows a hand in armour grasping a sword, symbolizing readiness to defend clan honour and the fierce martial spirit of the Gigha chiefs.

Clan Motto

Their motto is “Vincere aut Mori” (Conquer or Die), reflecting courage, determination, and the unyielding spirit of Highland warriors.

Clan Septs

Septs and families connected with Clan MacNeil of Gigha include MacNeal, Neil, Neilson, Nelson, MacGonigal, and other variations of the ancient name.

Clan Tartan

The MacNeil of Gigha tartan is a distinguished sett of dark greens, blues, and reds with black accents — a more subdued pattern than that of Barra, yet equally symbolic of the clan’s island heritage and loyalty.
