Clan MacLeod

The Clan MacLeod (Gaelic: Clann Mhic Leòid) is one of the great clans of the Hebrides, with a proud lineage tracing back to Leod, a Norse-Gaelic chief descended from the Kings of Mann and the Isles. The MacLeods became powerful lords of the Isles of Skye, Harris, and Lewis, renowned as seafarers, warriors, and patrons of Gaelic culture. Their strongholds include the legendary Dunvegan Castle on the Isle of Skye, still home to the clan chiefs today.

Clan Crest

The crest of the MacLeod of Harris (the senior branch) shows a bull’s head cabossed between two flags, symbolizing strength and leadership.
The crest of the MacLeod of Lewis (the cadet branch) features a mountain in flames, representing resilience and endurance.

Clan Motto

  • MacLeod of Harris: “Hold Fast” — a declaration of strength and loyalty.

  • MacLeod of Lewis: “I Birn Quhil I Se” (I Burn While I See), a motto of vigilance and constancy.

War Cry

The MacLeod war cry is tied to their island homelands and the rallying traditions of the Hebridean Gaels.

Clan Septs

Septs and families associated with Clan MacLeod include McCloyd, McLeod, McLute, Loud, and Lewis, reflecting the spread and anglicized forms of the name.

Clan Tartan

  • MacLeod of Harris (the “MacLeod of Harris” tartan): a dark and dignified sett of green, navy, and black.

  • MacLeod of Lewis (the “MacLeod of Lewis” tartan): the bold yellow and black pattern often called “MacLeod of the Loud Tartan” for its striking design.
