MacBain Clan — History, Crest, Motto, Septs, Tartan

Celebrate your MacBain heritage with authentic details drawn from Scottish tradition.

History & Origins
The MacBain clan, also spelled MacBean, comes from the Badenoch region of the central Highlands. Their Gaelic name Mac’ic Bheathain means “son of the fair one.” The MacBains were proud members of the Clan Chattan Confederation, a powerful alliance of Highland clans. They are remembered as fierce warriors, most famously through Gillies MacBain, who fought and died heroically at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, defending Bonnie Prince Charlie’s cause.

Crest & Motto
Crest: A wildcat rampant, holding a shield
Motto: Touch Not the Catt Bot a Targe — “Do not touch the cat without a shield”
Badge etiquette: Clansfolk wear the chief’s crest within a strap-and-buckle displaying the motto, a symbol of both MacBain identity and their place within Clan Chattan.

Septs & Associated Names
Associated names and variants include MacBean, McBain, McBean, MacVean, Bain, Bean, Beattie, and others linked through Gaelic roots and shared ancestry.
