Lyon Clan — History, Crest, Motto, Septs, Tartan

Celebrate your Lyon heritage with authentic details drawn from Scottish tradition.

History & Origins
The Lyon clan descends from the Norman family de Lyon, who settled in Scotland during the reign of King Malcolm Canmore in the 11th century. They were granted lands in Glen Lyon, Perthshire, an area known as one of the most beautiful glens in Scotland. From these beginnings, the family rose to great prominence as hereditary keepers of Glamis Castle, later ennobled as the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne. Through this line, the Lyons are directly connected to the British royal family.

Crest: A lady dressed in azure, holding a thistle in her hand
Motto: In Te Domine Speravi — “In Thee, O Lord, have I put my trust”
Badge etiquette: Clansfolk wear the chief’s crest within a strap-and-buckle displaying the motto.
