Lockhart Clan — History, Crest, Motto, Septs, Tartan

Celebrate your Lockhart heritage with authentic details drawn from Scottish tradition.

History & Origins
The Lockhart name originates in Lanarkshire, descended from the Locards (or Logards) of Normandy who settled in Scotland in the 12th century. The most famous ancestor, Sir Symon Locard, carried the heart of Robert the Bruce on crusade in 1329. From this act, the family adopted the name Lockhart, symbolizing the “locked heart.” Over the centuries, the Lockharts became prominent landholders of Lee Castle, serving the Scottish crown and nation with distinction.

Crest & Motto
Traditional Crest (Cap Badge): A dexter hand holding a padlock Proper
Alternative Crest (Heraldic Arms): A boar’s head erased, crowned and mantled
Motto: Corda Serrata Pando — “I open locked hearts”
Badge etiquette: Clansfolk may wear the chief’s crest within a strap-and-buckle displaying the motto. The hand with padlock is the official crest badge, though the boar’s head remains a strong heraldic symbol of certain Lockhart arms.

Septs & Associated Names
Variants and associated names include Locard, Lockhard, Locart, and Locarde, reflecting the clan’s Norman and Lowland Scottish roots.

Tartan
Lockhart Clan Tartans: Official tartans include Lockhart Modern, Lockhart Ancient, and Lockhart Weathered.
• These tartans are suitable for kilts, scarves, ties, sashes, and accessories celebrating Lockhart lineage.

How to Wear
• Pair the Lockhart crest badge (with the padlock) or a heraldic boar’s head emblem with the Lockhart tartan for formal occasions.
• Perfect for weddings, Highland games, and heritage gatherings—on kilts, shawls, stoles, and neckwear.
