THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, derived from Gaelic meaning "Black Knife," is believed to have originated from the knife's dark aesthetic, as early handles were often intricately carved from black bog wood, and the blades darkened with use over time. Another theory suggests that the name reflects the concealed nature of the weapon, emphasizing the tradition of wearing the Sgian Dubh in plain sight atop the stocking while donning Highland attire, signaling the wearer's friendly intentions.
It is important to note that the Sgian Dubh was never intended to be regarded as a weapon!
