Leask Clan — History, Crest, Motto, Septs, Tartan

Celebrate your Leask heritage with authentic details drawn from Scottish tradition.

History & Origins
The Leask name is of Norse origin, believed to come from the Old Norse lióskr, meaning “shining” or “flame.” The family is traditionally associated with Aberdeenshire and the northeast of Scotland. The Leasks were allied closely with the powerful Clan Gordon, often serving as their vassals and supporters in the region. The clan is recognized as an armigerous clan today, with historic chiefs but currently without a formally recognized chief by the Lord Lyon.

Crest & Motto
Crest: A demi-griffin holding a sword
Motto: Virtute Cresco — “I grow by virtue”
Badge etiquette: As an armigerous name, Leask clansfolk wear the crest and motto within a strap-and-buckle design.

Septs & Spellings
Spelling variations include Leask, Lisk, Lesk, and Leisk. These names are all linked to the same Aberdeenshire heritage.

Tartan
Leask Clan Tartan: A registered family tartan, available in Modern, Ancient, and Weathered color palettes.
• Ideal for kilts, scarves, ties, sashes, and accessories that reflect Leask lineage.

How to Wear
• Pair the Leask crest badge with the Leask tartan for formal occasions.
• Perfect for weddings, Highland games, and heritage events—on kilts, shawls, stoles, and neckwear.
