🏰 Clan Spaulding

Clan Spaulding (sometimes spelled Spalding) is an ancient Scottish Lowland family of Anglo-Norman origin. The name derives from the town of Spalding in Lincolnshire, England, and the family is believed to have settled in Scotland during the 13th century.
One of the earliest recorded members, John de Spaldyn, witnessed charters in Aberdeen around 1294, marking the establishment of the family in the northeast of Scotland.

During the reign of Robert the Bruce, Peter de Spaulding, a burgess of Berwick, aided Bruce’s forces in capturing the town in 1318. For his loyalty, he was rewarded with lands in Angus, including Ballourthy (Balzeordie) and Pitmachie, and appointed keeper of the royal forest of Kilgerry. From him descended the principal line — the Spauldings of Ashintully, whose seat was Ashintully Castle in Perthshire.

By the 17th century the Spauldings had become respected lairds and loyal supporters of the Scottish Crown. Like many noble families, they later backed the Jacobite cause, resulting in forfeited estates and the exile of several members to Europe and the Americas. Today, Clan Spaulding is an armigerous clan — one without a currently recognized chief under the Lord Lyon Court — but it remains active through family societies worldwide.

🛡️ Clan Crest Description

The crest badge features:

  • A stone tower with a red portcullis, symbolizing fortitude, vigilance, and protection of home and honor.

  • The belt and buckle surrounding the crest — the traditional emblem of clan loyalty and allegiance to the chief.

  • Gold and blue torse and accents, representing nobility, steadfastness, and devotion.

The raised portcullis suggests readiness to defend yet openness to friendship — a perfect emblem for a family known for loyalty and integrity.
