Collection: Murray of Mermaid

Clan Murray (Mermaid)

History
The Murray clan traces its origins back to the 12th century, when the nobleman Freskin de Moravia was granted lands in West Lothian and Moray by King David I of Scotland. From Freskin descended the line known as “de Moravia” (meaning “of Moray”), which later became Murray in the Scots tongue.
A major branch became the Murrays of Tullibardine, later rising to the titles of Earls and Dukes of Atholl. Throughout history, Clan Murray played prominent roles in Scottish politics, supported Scottish independence during the Wars of Independence, and held high positions in the royal court.

Clan Crest and Motto
The Murray clan crest features a mermaid holding a mirror in her right hand and a comb in her left — symbolizing beauty, mystery, and the sea’s strength.
The clan motto is “Tout Prêt”, meaning “Quite ready” or “Always ready.”
Another traditional version of the crest shows a demi-savage holding a dagger and a key, with the motto “Furth Fortune and Fill the Fetters,” meaning “Go forth with fortune and take your captives.”
