THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"

The term Sgian Dubh, which translates to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the knife's dark appearance. Historically, the handles were often hand-carved from black bog wood, and the blades would darken with age and use. Another theory suggests that the name derives from the discreet nature of this easily concealed knife, leading to the tradition of wearing the Sgian Dubh visibly atop the stocking in Highland dress, signifying friendship and goodwill.

It is important to clarify that the Sgian Dubh is not, nor should it be considered, a weapon. Our company has proudly served the Scottish Clan crest community for over 43 years, creating cherished Clan jewelry for the children and grandchildren of our original customers.
