Clan Matheson

Crest: A hand holding a sword, emerging from a crown.
Motto: “Fac et Spera” (Do and Hope).

History

The Matheson Clan (Clann Mhic Mhathain) has its origins in the ancient Highlands of Scotland, particularly in Ross-shire. The name Matheson is thought to come from the Gaelic Mic Mhathain, meaning “son of the bear”, symbolizing strength, courage, and resilience.

By the 13th and 14th centuries, the Mathesons were a powerful force in Ross, commanding great respect and influence. They were closely allied with the MacDonalds, Lords of the Isles, and later with the Mackenzies, under whose protection they often stood. Despite hardships and clan conflicts, the Mathesons earned a reputation for loyalty and steadfastness.

Crest & Motto

The crest depicts an arm wielding a sword, rising from a crown — a bold emblem of authority, readiness, and martial strength.
The motto “Fac et Spera” (Do and Hope) reflects the clan’s enduring spirit: to act with courage and perseverance, trusting in hope and divine providence.

Tartan

The Matheson tartan is a striking blend of red, green, dark blue, and black, symbolizing both the rugged Highlands and the boldness of the clan. It is one of the more dramatic and recognizable tartans of northern Scotland.

Seat

The Mathesons’ historic seat was in Lochalsh, Ross-shire, where they held power and influence for centuries. Though their independent strength diminished over time, their legacy lives on in Highland history, tartan, and heraldry.
