Clan Marr

Crest: Two peacock’s wings addorsed, proper (displayed outward in natural colors).
Motto: “Pans Plus” (More Thought).

History

The Clan Marr (sometimes spelled Mar) is one of Scotland’s most ancient noble families, with deep ties to the Earldom of Mar, among the oldest earldoms in the kingdom. The family’s ancestry stretches back to the early medieval Mormaers of Mar, rulers of Aberdeenshire, who held considerable power during the formation of the Scottish nation.

Throughout history, the Mar family played crucial roles in Scotland’s political and military life. During the Wars of Independence, the Earls of Mar supported Robert the Bruce, and in the 18th century, John Erskine, 6th Earl of Mar, became a leading figure in the Jacobite Rising of 1715, earning the nickname “Bobbing John”.

Though more a noble house than a Highland clan, the Marr name remains inseparable from Scottish history and aristocracy.

Crest & Motto

The crest shows two peacock’s wings addorsed — a rare and striking heraldic symbol representing pride, dignity, beauty, and nobility. In heraldry, the peacock is associated with majesty and immortality. The wings signify elevated honor and vigilance.
The motto, “Pans Plus” (More Thought), underlines the importance of wisdom, foresight, and thoughtful judgment in leadership.

Tartan

The Marr tartan is woven in shades of green, navy, and black with red overstripes, a dignified and traditional design reflecting the family’s noble Lowland heritage.

Seat

The historic seat of the Earls of Mar was Kildrummy Castle in Aberdeenshire, one of the strongest medieval castles in Scotland. Though now in ruins, it remains a powerful reminder of the clan’s ancient authority and legacy.
