Celebrate your MacGillivray heritage with authentic details drawn from Scottish tradition.

History & Origins

The MacGillivray clan, from the Gaelic MacGillebràthair meaning “son of the servant of judgment” or sometimes “son of the servant of the priest,” is a Highland clan of ancient origins. Traditionally associated with the lands of Dunmaglass in Inverness-shire, the MacGillivrays were part of the great Clan Chattan Confederation. They fought alongside their confederate allies in many historic battles, most notably at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, where their chief and many clansmen fell in support of the Jacobite cause.

Crest & Motto

  • Crest: A wildcat sejant proper

  • Motto: Touch not this cat — a fierce warning of loyalty and ferocity in battle

  • Badge etiquette: Clansfolk wear the crest within a strap-and-buckle, encircling the motto.

Septs & Associated Names

Associated and variant names include Gillivray, MacIllivray, McGillivary, and other phonetic spellings.

Tartan

  • MacGillivray Clan Tartans: Recognized tartans include MacGillivray in Modern, Ancient, and Weathered styles.

  • The wildcat, symbolic of independence and courage, pairs well with the striking patterns of the MacGillivray tartan for kilts, scarves, sashes, and more.

How to Wear

  • The MacGillivray crest badge is often worn on bonnets, plaids, or sashes to proudly display clan allegiance.

  • Perfect for Highland games, weddings, and heritage events, honoring both the Chattan Confederation and the independent spirit of Clan MacGillivray.
