THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, which translates to Black Knife in Gaelic, is believed to derive from the knife's dark aesthetic—early versions were often hand-carved from black bog wood, and the blades darkened with use over time. Another theory suggests it refers to the concealed nature of the weapon, which is why tradition dictates wearing the Sgian Dubh in an open manner atop the stocking while dressed in Highland attire, signifying that the wearer is among friends and harbors no ill intent. It is essential to recognize that the Sgian Dubh is not a weapon and should not be treated as such!
With over 43 years of experience in the Scottish Clan crest industry, our company proudly continues to provide Clan jewelry for the children and grandchildren of our very first customers.
