THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, meaning "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the knife’s dark appearance, as early handles were often carved from black bog wood, and the blades would darken over time. Another theory suggests that the name reflects the concealed nature of the weapon; traditionally, the Sgian Dubh is worn visibly at the top of the stocking when dressed in Highland attire, signifying friendship and lack of ill intent. Importantly, the Sgian Dubh is not to be regarded as a weapon.
With over 43 years of experience in the Scottish Clan crest business, our company is now proud to create Clan jewelry for the children and grandchildren of our first customers.
