THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, translating from Gaelic to 'Black Knife,' is believed to have originated from the knife's dark aesthetic. Early versions featured handles carved from black bog wood, and the blades would acquire a dark patina over time. Another theory suggests that the name stems from the concealed nature of this weapon, leading to the tradition of wearing the Sgian Dubh visibly atop the stocking when dressed in Highland attire, signaling friendship and goodwill.
It is important to recognize that the Sgian Dubh was never intended to be a weapon and should not be regarded as such!
