THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, which translates to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated due to the knife's dark aesthetic—historically, handles were often intricately carved from black bog wood, while the blades would darken over time with use and age. Another theory suggests it relates to the concealed nature of this weapon, which is why it has become customary to display the Sgian Dubh on the upper part of the stocking while wearing Highland attire, signifying that the wearer is among friends and harbors no harmful intentions. It is important to note that the Sgian Dubh should not be regarded as a weapon.
