SCOTTISH CLAN CREST SGIAN DUBH
Discover the elegance of the Sgian Dubh, a traditional Scottish knife featuring a striking black handle, customizable with your Clan crest crafted in lead-free pewter or exquisite sterling silver.
This newly crafted Sgian Dubh measures 7-1/2” in length and 1-3/8” in width, showcasing a high-quality stainless steel blade and nickel silver plated fittings. The top of the knife is adorned with a synthetic stone available in imitation topaz, sapphire blue, or emerald green options.
The Clan crest is elegantly encircled by a meticulously designed belt and buckle motif, featuring your clan motto inscribed in raised relief lettering. Historically, the chief of the Clan would gift his crest to clansmen, symbolizing loyalty and Clan affiliation. Each piece is beautifully handcrafted with intricate detailing in sterling silver, and the Clan Crest measures 11/16" (19.5mm) in diameter.
Kindly note that this item is made to order, typically completed within a few days. All Clans are represented, so be sure to include your Clan name in the comments section when placing your order. This Sgian Dubh is well-constructed, featuring a resin handle and sheath, with plated fittings. In contrast, a genuine vintage Sgian Dubh with sterling silver fittings can exceed $1,000.00, making this an economical choice.
THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, which translates from Gaelic as "Black Knife," is believed to derive from the knife's dark appearance—the original handles were often hand-carved from black bog wood, and the blades would darken over time with use and age.
Another theory suggests that the name stems from its dark and easily concealed nature, which is why it is traditionally worn in plain sight atop the stocking while donning Highland attire, signaling that the wearer is among friends with no malicious intent.
It is crucial to note that the Sgian Dubh was never intended to be considered a weapon!
