The term Sgian Dubh, which translates to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to reflect the knife's dark appearance, as early handles were often carved from black bog wood, and the blade would darken with use and age. An alternate theory suggests that the name stems from the knife's concealed nature, leading to the tradition of wearing the Sgian Dubh visibly atop the stocking in Highland dress, signifying that the wearer is among friends and bears no ill intent.
