🗡️ The Origin of the Sgian Dubh
The term “Sgian Dubh” (Gaelic for Black Knife) has deep historical roots:
-
Early handles were often carved from dark bog wood, giving rise to its name.
-
Some suggest its origin refers to the “dark” or concealed nature of the blade — a small knife carried discreetly for practical use.
For this reason, it became tradition to wear the Sgian Dubh openly in the stocking top when in Highland dress — symbolizing friendship and trust, showing that no weapon is hidden.
The Sgian Dubh was never meant as a weapon, but as a ceremonial and practical Highland accessory, integral to traditional Scottish attire.
