The Brigid Celtic Cross

The Brigid Celtic Cross measures 3/4" in width and length (20mm). It features a polished sterling silver back, beautifully stamped for authenticity. The antiqued front showcases intricate details that highlight its craftsmanship.

Saint Brigid, revered as the second patron saint of Ireland after St. Patrick, is also known by the names Saint Bride or Bridget (451-523 AD). According to legend, she was a woman of remarkable beauty and talent. Raised in a Druid family, she chose not to marry her suitor at the age of 14 and instead decided to live as a nun in a small convent nestled under a grand oak tree. This location later became the site of the Kildare monastery, with "Kildare" translating to "Church of the Oak." Additionally, she is celebrated as the patroness of the Knights of Chivalry, and it is believed that the term "bride" originated from knights marrying women who were their cherished 'brides.'

In a traditional Irish tale, while teaching a dying man about Christianity, St. Brigid crafted a cross from rushes to illustrate the crucifixion and the message of salvation. This marked the creation of the first St. Brigid's Cross. Traditionally, these crosses were hung in homes and stables to ward off evil and hunger, and this practice continues today, with rush crosses often placed in the rafters of dwellings. The feast day honoring Saint Brigid is celebrated on February 1st, coinciding with her death and the Celtic fire festival of Imbolc, which signifies the return of light after winter's darkness. This date also marks the beginning of spring in the Celtic calendar, a vital period for farmers as it heralds the end of winter.

Additionally, St. Brigid is affectionately recognized as the patron saint of beer. This exquisite sterling silver Irish pendant serves as a meaningful gift for any Irish woman you wish to protect.

This charming cross makes a delightful present for brides-to-be or bridesmaids, and we also offer a larger version of the St. Brigid Cross for those seeking something more substantial.
