THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The name Sgian Dubh, translating to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the dark appearance of the knife—historically, the handles were often crafted from black bog wood, and the blades would darken over time through use. Another theory suggests that it reflects the concealed nature of the weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn visible at the top of the stocking in Highland attire, signifying that the wearer is among friends and harbors no ill intentions. Importantly, the Sgian Dubh is not intended to be considered a weapon!
