THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, derived from Gaelic meaning "Black Knife," is believed to stem from the knife's dark hue—historically, handles were often hand-carved from black bog wood, and blades would darken with use and age. Another theory suggests the name relates to the concealed nature of this weapon, which is why tradition dictates that it be worn visibly at the top of the stocking while donning Highland attire, signaling friendship and the absence of malicious intent. Importantly, the Sgian Dubh is not to be regarded as a weapon!
