SCOTTISH CLAN CREST SGIAN DUBH
This exquisite Sgian Dubh, a traditional Scottish knife featuring a striking black handle, can be customized with your Clan crest crafted in lead-free pewter or premium sterling silver.
Measuring 7-1/2” in length and 1-3/8” in width, this new Sgian Dubh boasts a stainless steel blade and fittings plated in nickel silver. It is adorned with a synthetic stone available in imitation topaz, sapphire blue, or emerald green at the top.
The Clan crest is elegantly framed by an intricate belt and buckle design, which features your clan motto inscribed in raised relief lettering. Historically, the chief of the Clan would bestow his crest upon clansmen as a mark of loyalty and belonging. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted in sterling silver, with the Clan Crest measuring 11/16" (19.5mm) in diameter.
Kindly note that this item is made to order and typically takes just a few days to complete. All Clan options are available. To finalize your special request, please include your Clan name in the comments section when placing your order. While this Sgian Dubh is well-crafted, its handle and sheath are made from resin material, and the fittings are plated. In contrast, a "genuine" antique Sgian Dubh with sterling silver fittings often exceeds $1,000.00; this model offers a more economical choice.
THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, meaning "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the knife's dark aesthetic—historically, handles were often carved from black bog wood, and the blades would darken over time with use.
An alternative theory suggests that its name comes from the concealed and potentially sinister nature of the weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn visibly on top of the stocking in Highland attire, indicating that the wearer is among friends and bears no harmful intentions.
It’s important to clarify that the Sgian Dubh was never intended to be, and should not be regarded as, a weapon!
