SCOTTISH CLAN CREST SGIAN DUBH
Introducing the exquisite Sgian Dubh, a traditional Scottish knife featuring a classic black handle. This stunning piece can be customized with your Clan crest, crafted from lead-free pewter or fine sterling silver.
Measuring 7-1/2 inches in length and 1-3/8 inches in width, this new Sgian Dubh is designed with a stainless steel blade and nickel silver-plated fittings. The knife is adorned with your choice of a synthetic stone in imitation topaz, sapphire blue, or emerald green at the top.
Your Clan crest is elegantly encircled by a meticulously detailed belt and buckle design, which proudly displays your clan motto in raised relief lettering. Historically, the chief of the Clan would grant his crest to clansmen as a mark of loyalty and Clan connection. Each knife is skillfully handcrafted with high attention to detail, and the Clan Crest measures 11/16" (19.5mm) in diameter.
Please note that this item is made to order and typically takes only a few days to complete. All Clans are available for customization. To finalize your special order, simply include your Clan name in the comments section during checkout. While this Sgian Dubh is crafted to be durable, the handle and sheath are made from resin, and the fittings are plated. In contrast, a "genuine" vintage Sgian Dubh featuring sterling silver fittings can exceed $1,000, making this an economical choice.
THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, which translates to Black Knife in Gaelic, is believed to derive from the knife's dark appearance; early handles were often crafted from black bog wood, and the blade would darken over time due to use and exposure. Another theory suggests that its name comes from its association with a concealed weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn visibly at the top of the stocking while dressed in Highland attire, signaling to others that the wearer is among friends and harbors no malicious intent. It’s essential to understand that the Sgian Dubh was never intended to be regarded as a weapon!
