THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, translating to Black Knife in Gaelic, is believed to derive from the knife's dark appearance, as early handles were often crafted from black bog wood and the blades would darken with age and use. Another theory suggests the name reflects the concealed nature of this weapon, leading to the tradition of wearing the Sgian Dubh visibly at the top of the stocking in Highland attire, signaling that the wearer is among friends and harbors no ill intentions. Importantly, the Sgian Dubh should never be regarded as a weapon!
With over 43 years of experience in the Scottish Clan crest business, our company proudly creates Clan jewelry for the children and grandchildren of our original customers.
