Historical Belt and Buckle Design
The Clan crest is framed by a traditional belt and buckle motif, with your Clan motto in raised relief. This design reflects the historic tradition in which a Clan chief would bestow his crest upon clansmen as a symbol of loyalty and unity. The Clan crest measures 11/16” (19.5 mm) in diameter and is meticulously handcrafted for precision and authenticity.
Made to Order for Your Clan
Each Sgian Dubh is custom made to order, requiring a few days for production to ensure the highest quality craftsmanship.
The Tradition and Origin of the Sgian Dubh
The term Sgian Dubh (Gaelic for “Black Knife”) is thought to originate from its dark appearance, as traditional handles were often made from black bog wood and blades would darken with age. Another theory is that the name reflects the knife’s concealed nature, which led to the Highland custom of wearing it openly in the stocking top—a gesture showing the wearer’s peaceful intent among friends.
While symbolic in Highland dress, the Sgian Dubh should never be regarded as a weapon.
