THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, which translates from Gaelic to "Black Knife," is believed to have historical roots linked to the knife's dark aesthetic. Originally, handles were often hand-carved from black bog wood, and blades would darken over time through use and exposure. Another theory suggests that the name reflects the concealed nature of the weapon, which is why it is traditionally displayed atop the stocking when wearing Highland attire—to signify friendship and good intentions.
It’s important to note that the Sgian Dubh was never intended to be a weapon, nor should it be perceived as such!
