THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term "Sgian Dubh," which translates to Black Knife in Gaelic, is believed to derive from the knife's dark appearance. Originally, handles were often carved from black bog wood, and the blades would darken over time through use. Another theory suggests that the name reflects the concealed nature of the weapon, leading to the tradition of wearing the Sgian Dubh visibly atop the stocking while donning Highland attire, symbolizing friendship and good intentions. It’s important to clarify that the Sgian Dubh is not intended to be viewed as a weapon.
