THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The name Sgian Dubh, which translates to Black Knife in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the knife's dark appearance—early handles were often intricately carved from black bog wood, while the blades darkened with use and age. Another theory suggests that the name comes from the concealed nature of the weapon, which is why it is customary to wear the Sgian Dubh visibly atop the stocking when donning Highland attire, signaling that the wearer is among friends and poses no threat. It is essential to understand that the Sgian Dubh is not, and should not be regarded as, a weapon!
