THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, meaning "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to reference the knife's dark appearance. Historically, handles were often carved from black bog wood, and blades would darken over time due to use and age. An alternate theory suggests that the name reflects the concealed nature of this weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn visibly atop the stocking when dressed in Highland attire, signifying the wearer's friendly intent.
It is essential to understand that the Sgian Dubh is not, and should not be perceived as, a weapon.
