THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term "Sgian Dubh," which translates from Gaelic to "Black Knife," is believed to have originated from the knife's dark appearance; early versions were often hand-carved from black bog wood, and the blades darkened with use over time. Another theory suggests that the name reflects the concealed nature of this weapon, which is why it is traditionally displayed atop the stocking while wearing Highland attire, signaling that the wearer bears no ill will and is among friends.
It is essential to note that the Sgian Dubh is not considered a weapon! With over 43 years of experience in the Scottish Clan crest business, our company is now proud to create Clan jewelry for the children and grandchildren of our original customers.
