THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The origins of the term Sgian Dubh, which translates to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, are believed to stem from the knife's dark appearance—early versions often featured handles hand-carved from black bog wood, while the blades would darken over time due to use and age. Another theory suggests it reflects the concealed nature of the weapon, emphasizing its traditional placement in full view at the top of the stocking while wearing Highland attire, signaling that the wearer is among allies with no malicious intent. Importantly, the Sgian Dubh was never intended to be a weapon!
