SCOTTISH CLAN CREST SGIAN DUBH
Discover the elegance of the Sgian Dubh, a traditional Scottish knife characterized by its stunning black handle. This exquisite piece can be customized with your Clan crest, available in both lead-free pewter and fine sterling silver options.
Measuring 7-1/2” in length and 1-3/8” in width, this Sgian Dubh features a durable stainless steel blade accompanied by nickel-silver plated fittings. At the top, you'll find a charming synthetic stone available in three captivating colors: imitation topaz, sapphire blue, or emerald green.
The Clan crest is elegantly encircled by a meticulously designed belt and buckle motif, which proudly displays your clan motto in raised relief lettering. Historically, the chief of the Clan would bestow this crest upon his clansmen as a symbol of loyalty and Clan affiliation. Each Sgian Dubh is handcrafted with exceptional attention to detail in sterling silver, with the Clan Crest measuring 11/16" (19.5mm) in diameter.
Kindly note that this item is made to order, typically within a few days. We proudly offer every Clan, so be sure to include your Clan name in the comments section during the ordering process. While this Sgian Dubh is thoughtfully crafted with a sturdy handle and sheath made from resin material, the fittings are plated. In contrast, a genuine vintage Sgian Dubh with sterling silver fittings can fetch prices exceeding $1,000. This model provides an economical option without compromising on quality.
THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, which translates to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the knife’s dark appearance. Traditionally, handles were carved from black bog wood, and with time and use, the blade would also darken. Another theory suggests that it stems from the concealed nature of this weapon, leading to the custom of displaying the Sgian Dubh prominently at the top of the stocking when dressed in Highland attire, signaling trust and goodwill among peers. It's essential to note that the Sgian Dubh is not intended to be viewed as a weapon.
