THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The origins of the term Sgian Dubh, which translates to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, are believed to derive from the knife's dark aesthetic—early handles were often handcrafted from black bog wood, and the blades would darken with age and use. Another theory suggests that the name reflects the concealed nature of this weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn visibly atop the stocking in Highland dress, signifying friendship and goodwill.
It is important to note that the Sgian Dubh is not, nor should it be regarded as, a weapon!
