THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, translating to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is thought to derive from the knife's dark appearance. Historically, early handles were crafted from black bog wood, and the blades darkened with age and use. Another theory suggests it relates to the concealed nature of this weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn visibly at the top of the stocking in Highland attire, symbolizing friendship and good intentions.
It is essential to clarify that the Sgian Dubh was never meant to be regarded as a weapon, and it should not be perceived as such.
With over 43 years of experience in the Scottish Clan crest industry, our company proudly continues to create Clan jewelry for the children and grandchildren of our original customers, celebrating heritage and tradition.
