THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, which translates to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the knife's dark aesthetics. Historically, the handles were often hand-carved from black bog wood, and the blades would darken over time through use. Another theory suggests that the name reflects the concealed nature of this weapon, leading to the tradition of wearing the Sgian Dubh visibly at the top of the stocking during Highland attire, signifying friendship and goodwill.
It is important to note that the Sgian Dubh should never be regarded as a weapon; its role is purely ceremonial and symbolic. Our company has proudly served the Scottish Clan crest community for over forty years, and we are honored to create Clan jewelry for the children and grandchildren of our first customers.
