THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, derived from Gaelic meaning "Black Knife," is believed to have originated from the knife's dark aesthetic—early versions featured handles handcrafted from black bog wood, and the blades would darken with use and age. Another theory suggests that the name relates to the concealed nature of the knife, traditionally worn openly in the top of the stocking while adorned in Highland attire to signify friendship and the absence of malicious intent. Importantly, the Sgian Dubh is not intended to be considered a weapon.
With over 43 years of experience in the Scottish Clan crest business, our company proudly continues to create Clan jewelry for the children and grandchildren of our first customers, upholding a legacy of quality and tradition.
