THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, which translates to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to derive from the knife's dark aesthetic—originally, handles were often hand-carved from black bog wood, and the blade would darken over time due to use and aging. Another theory suggests its name stems from the concealed nature of this weapon, which is why it has become customary to display the Sgian Dubh atop the stocking when wearing Highland attire, signifying friendship and goodwill.
It is important to note that the Sgian Dubh is not, and should not be regarded as, a weapon!
