THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, which translates from Gaelic to "Black Knife," is believed to have originated from the knife's dark appearance—early handles were often intricately carved from black bog wood, while the blades would darken with age and usage. Another theory suggests that the name is rooted in the weapon's concealed nature; it became customary to display the Sgian Dubh atop the stocking while wearing Highland attire, indicating that the wearer is among friends and holds no malicious intent. It's essential to note that the Sgian Dubh is not, and should not be considered, a weapon!
