SCOTTISH CLAN CREST SGIAN DUBH
Introducing the exquisite Sgian Dubh, a traditional Scottish knife featuring a striking black handle, expertly crafted with your Clan crest in lead-free pewter or fine sterling silver.
This newly designed Sgian Dubh measures 7-1/2 inches in length and 1-3/8 inches in width, boasting a stainless steel blade complemented by nickel silver plated fittings. At the top, you can choose from an imitation topaz, sapphire blue, or emerald green synthetic stone to add a personal touch.
Each Clan crest is elegantly encircled by a meticulously detailed belt and buckle design, showcasing your clan motto in raised relief lettering. Historically, the Clan chief would bestow his crest upon clansmen as a symbol of loyalty and affiliation. The Clan Crest itself boasts a diameter of 11/16 inches (19.5mm) and is handcrafted to ensure high-quality detail in sterling silver.
Kindly note that this item is made to order, typically completed within a few days. All Clans are available for customization. To finalize your special request, simply add your Clan name in the comment section during the ordering process. Although this Sgian Dubh is crafted with care, please be aware that the handle and sheath are made from resin material, while the fittings are plated. In contrast, an authentic antique Sgian Dubh with sterling silver fittings often exceeds $1,000, making this a budget-friendly option.
THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, which means "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated due to the knife's dark appearance—traditionally, the handles were carved from black bog wood, and the blades would darken with age and use. Another theory suggests that its name comes from its concealed nature, as it was often hidden but traditionally worn visibly at the top of the stocking when dressed in Highland attire, symbolizing that the wearer is among friends and harbors no ill intentions. It is important to note that the Sgian Dubh should not be considered a weapon.
