THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, which translates to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the knife's dark appearance. Early handles were often hand-carved from black bog wood, and the blade naturally darkened with use and age. Another theory suggests that the name stems from the stealthy nature of this easily concealed weapon, leading to the tradition of wearing the Sgian Dubh visibly at the top of the stocking while dressed in Highland attire, signifying the wearer's friendly intent.
It is important to clarify that the Sgian Dubh was never intended to be regarded as a weapon!
