THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, translating to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the knife's dark aesthetic—historically, handles were often hand-carved from black bog wood, and blades would darken over time through use. Another theory suggests the name stems from the weapon's easily concealable nature, which is why it is traditionally worn visibly at the top of the stocking in Highland attire, signaling friendship and intentions of goodwill. Importantly, the Sgian Dubh should not be regarded as a weapon!
