THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, derived from Gaelic meaning "Black Knife," is thought to reflect the knife's dark aesthetic—originally, handles were hand-carved from black bog wood, and the blades would darken with age and use. Another theory suggests its name stems from the concealed nature of this weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn in plain sight at the top of the stocking when dressed in Highland attire, indicating friendship and good intentions.
It is important to note that the Sgian Dubh is not, nor should it be regarded as, a weapon!
