THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, translating to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, likely stems from the knife's dark aesthetic—historically, handles were often carved from black bog wood, and the blade would darken with age and use. Another theory suggests that the name is related to the concealed nature of this weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn visibly at the top of the stocking when donning Highland attire, indicating friendship and good intentions.
It is essential to clarify that the Sgian Dubh is not, and should not be perceived as, a weapon!
