THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, which translates to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the knife's dark aesthetic. Early handles were often intricately hand-carved from black bog wood, and the blades would darken over time with use. Another theory suggests that the name stems from the concealed nature of this weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn visibly at the top of the stocking when dressed in Highland attire, signaling that the wearer is among friends and poses no threat.
The Sgian Dubh is not, and should not be regarded as, a weapon!
