THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, which translates to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, has origins that may be linked to the knife's dark appearance. Traditionally, handles were hand-carved from black bog wood, and blades would darken with use over time. An alternative theory suggests that the name reflects the weapon's easily concealed nature, which is why it has become customary to display the Sgian Dubh prominently at the top of the stocking while wearing Highland attire—symbolizing friendship and good intentions.
It is important to note that the Sgian Dubh was never intended to be considered a weapon, and it should not be viewed as such!
