THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, which translates to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the knife's dark aesthetic. Historically, handles were often carved from black bog wood, and the blades would darken with use and age. Another theory suggests that the name reflects the concealed nature of the weapon, which is why it is traditionally worn visibly at the top of the stocking with Highland attire, indicating the wearer is among friends and poses no threat. Importantly, the Sgian Dubh should not be regarded as a weapon!
