THE ORIGIN OF THE "SGIAN DUBH"
The term Sgian Dubh, translating to "Black Knife" in Gaelic, is believed to have originated from the knife's dark aesthetic. Historically, handles were often intricately carved from black bog wood, and the blades darkened with age and use. Another theory posits that the name derives from the concealed nature of the weapon—hence the tradition of displaying the Sgian Dubh at the top of the stocking while wearing Highland attire, signaling trust and camaraderie.
It is essential to clarify that the Sgian Dubh is not intended to be a weapon and should not be regarded as such!
